How to Bookmark a Web Page on this website

When you come across a web page that you want to return to often or share with others, you have several options on how to find it again.  You could:

• Hope to remember where you found it,
• Try to remember what search term you used to find it the first time, and hope that using the same search term would bring you back,
• Write down the web page's address (URL), or
• Add a shortcut to that page to your computer, either in the Favorites/Bookmark folder, to the Links folder, or directly to your Desktop.

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to do this in both Internet Explorer and Netscape.

Adding a Shortcut to your Desktop

For web pages that you plan to return to often, or ones that you need to have handy for quick reference, the easiest thing to do is add a shortcut to that page to your desktop.

It's a very simple process. From the page you want to create the shortcut to, click in the Address box to highlight the page's URL; and

While holding down your mouse's dominant button (the left button by default), drag the URL's icon to your Desktop and release. In Internet Explorer, your shortcut will look like this.

Bookmarking a page

Both Internet Explorer and Netscape allow you to bookmark web pages: in Internet Explorer, you add a page to your Favorites folder; in Netscape, you bookmark the page.

Adding a page to your Favorites folder:

Internet Explorer gives you a few options in how to add a web page to your Favorites folder.  Since my computer has a large monitor, I always open Internet Explorer with the Favorites sidebar open.

That way, adding a page is a simple matter of clicking on the Add . . . button.

When the Add Favorite dialog box opens, simply enter in the name for your page (if the default name is too vague for you) and choose the folder that you want it in (optional), and click OK.

An alternate method of adding a page to Favorites

Internet Explorer also lets you add a page to your Favorites folder by an alternate method.

From the page you want to add to your Favorites folder, click on the Favorites button in the toolbar, then click on "Add to Favorites . . ."

The dialog box will appear, as in the first method.  Simply fill in the details, click OK, and the page will appear in your list of shortcuts.

Bookmarking a page in Netscape:

Netscape gives you two options for bookmarking a page, both of which do basically the same thing.  Simply click on the Bookmark button in either the main tool bar or the links tool bar.  A drop-down menu will appear. Either click on Bookmark This Page, to add your bookmark, or click on File Bookmark . . . to place the bookmark in a designated folder of your choice, or add it to your Links folder.

If you choose to File Bookmark . . . , the following dialog box will appear.  Simply fill in the details and click OK.

Adding a Page to the Links Folder

In Netscape: To add a page to the Links folder in Netscape, begin by selecting the URL in the address box, then click on the icon at the front of the page's URL.  A little hand icon will appear.

While holding down the dominant mouse button (the left button by default), drag the web page's icon to the Bookmark button.  The drop-down menu will appear. Continuing to hold down the mouse button, drag the web page's icon to the Links and release.

The web page will appear in the Links folder like this.

In Internet Explorer:

To add a web page to your Links folder in Internet Explorer, simply click on the URL in the Address box to select it.  Then, while holding down the dominant mouse button, drag the web page's icon to the arrow button on the Links button and release.

The link will appear something like this.
